The Maltese Islands - Malta, Gozo, tiny Comino - are 60 miles south of Sicily. Our base is Sliema ("peace" in the old Maltese language) near the capital city of Valletta. Lectures and field trips focus on ancient megalithic temples; matchless artifact collections; Phoenician and Roman eras; the medieval walled cities of Mdina and Victoria; amazing cathedrals, fortresses, and palaces of the Knights Hospitaller; Malta's strategic World War II role; as well as current political and ecological challenges. We also explore the fantastic 5,000-year-old underground Hypogeum, rustic villages, the island of legendary Calypso (Gozo) and spot many of Malta's 370 churches. Activities include sharing meals with local residents, seasonal pastimes, and Maltese games such as bocci ball.

Accommodations: Pleasant, comfortable, modern hotel across from seafront promenade in Sliema; double-occupancy bedrooms, private bathrooms; singles at supplemental cost; elevators, some steps. Amenities include restaurant, cafe, swimming pool, small fitness center, WiFi internet access.
