One temple contained the remains of a stone statue that once stood over seven feet tall. The positioning of the larger anthropomorphic (shaped like a human) figures within the temples indicate that these statues were objects of worship. There is an artistic "language" of expression, whether the figures are seated or standing. Standing statues usually show a ritual pose of one arm extended down and the other folded across the abdomen. Similar statues were also found in the underground burial shrines, as if to protect the dead.
Cult objects found in secure layers
of the temples raise questions about relationships with
pre-Biblical religions of the Middle East. |
